The Nakasendo, meaning "Central Mountain Route," was one of the five major highways connecting Kyoto and Edo (modern-day Tokyo) during the Edo period (1603-1868). Magome and Tsumago were important post towns along this route, providing lodging, food, and supplies for travelers. Today, these towns have been meticulously preserved, allowing visitors to step back in time and experience the atmosphere of old Japan. The hike between Magome and Tsumago is approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles) and takes around 2-3 hours to complete. The trail is well-maintained and relatively easy, with a gentle incline and decline. Along the way, you'll pass through lush forests, alongside cascading waterfalls, and through charming villages. Keep an eye out for historical landmarks, such as the Kosatsuba (notice board) and the Tateba (rest area). You can start your hike in either Magome or Tsumago, but many prefer starting in Magome due to the slightly downhill gradient.
